POST OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBEPITHELIAL GRAFT SURGERY

Following surgery you may experience some discomfort. You have been given a prescription to help control your post-operative discomfort. Please take it as directed. Please note that pain management is easier once you take your medication prior to developing severe pain. If you have any questions regarding this or any other medication, please do not hesitate to call the office.

Dr. Matin can be reached at (202) 422-6262 after business hours.

Please finish all of the antibiotics according to the directions on the label.

Thermal Compresses can help reduce post-operative discomfort. Cold compresses should be utilized for the first 36 hours. The first 5 hours of cold compresses will have the most significant effect in the reduction of your post-operative swelling. In the event of any swelling warm compresses can be utilized after the first 36 hours. Compresses should be applied for 15-minute periods with 15 minutes between applications. It is normal for swelling to increase for the first 1-2 days after surgery. If it continues to increase beyond that period, please call us.

Plaque removal is important not only for your periodontal and dental health. But it will also increase the speed and comfort of your recovery. You may experience slight bleeding during brushing of the teeth adjacent to the surgical site. This is normal, however, remember one drop of blood, like food coloring in a bucket of water, will discolor your saliva. Do not brush the surgical site while the sutures are in place. Do not use an electric toothbrush adjacent to the surgical site until the sutures are removed. The prescription Chlorhexidine rinse will help control plaque build up and speed healing. Use the rinse for 30 seconds in the morning and again in the evening.

To control bleeding utilize pressure on the area. Placing a wet tea bag (regular not herbal tea) with pressure on the area of bleeding is usually an effective way to control bleeding. If the bleeding cannot be brought under control, please call us. It is common to have some oozing after surgery. This usually ends within 24 hours.

The prescription Chlorhexidine rinse will help control bacterial plaque build up and speed healing. Use the rinse for 30 seconds in the morning and again in the evening. Do not rinse with commercial mouth rinses.

The two most important points are, first if you have any questions or concerns; please do not hesitate to call us. Secondly, we cannot overemphasize the importance of not smoking during your healing phase.
